2011 Nationals - Canberra
Total medal tally: 13 golds, 10 silvers, 8 bronze
Day 1
Day one was a very tough, but very good start to the competition. Lynn Walters was the only competitor from SA to win an gold medal in individual black belt division, and so was invited to compete in the "champion of champions" division against 6 of the best females in the country!
Unfortunately, Lynn did not get a medal but was honored to have the opportunity to compete against the best in the nation. Day one has proven that we can be competitive against the best in the nation on all levels.
Well done to competitors on day one!
Day 2
Pairs poomsae, and creative poomse to music. Our competitors were Reza Mohammad and Eve Yeung as Team Total Tigers, and Dervis Murtic and Lynn Walters as Team SA.
Our creative to music team was Dang's Little Devils, consisting of Maybeline San Juan, Nina Cuckovic, and Desi Antonas winning our only medal for day 2, a bronze.
Divisions were huge and the standard was very high, especially when most divisions had numerous national team competitors. One of the toughest poomsae days ever!
Well done to all competitors.
Day 3
This was our busiest day yet! Starting at 9am and getting home at 11pm - a 14 hour day! It was a very long wait in between bouts, which played a huge part in performance.
Tyrone performed strongly throughout the day, defeating all three opponents without even breaking a sweat. Unfortunately Thomas Whitaker was injured, meaning he had to withdraw from the rest of the competition. Also injured were Manuel and Josh, which nearly led them to withdrawal. However, both bravely decided to continue, which led them both to golden results! This was an inspiration to the rest of the team competing with only one strong leg and using strategies to succeed.
Overall the team did really well - congratulations to all our competitors!
Day 4
Day 4 was a mentally tough day for all. Fatigue from the late finish the previous night and minor injuries which occurred for the ones fighting in two or three divisions really put our competitors to the test. Well done to all competitors - once again we have proven to be a very strong force in the future.
We would also like to thank George Antonas, our team manager who kept the communications between, competitors, parents and coaches. More thanks goes to our coaches, Josie brown, Susan Mountstephen, Darren Rix, Evan King, and our head coach, Dang Nguyen.
It was a great learning experience for everyone. We would also like to thank all parents and supporters for their team effort and support over the last four days.
A mighty effort from everyone! Congratulations to all.

Victorian Inter-club Championships 2011 (20th -21st August)
Total Medal Tally: 2 golds, 2 silvers
Total Taekwondo Team sent 4 members to the Victorian inter-club championships held on the 21st of August, with very successful results!
It was an early plane flight Saturday 20th August for Jesse Campbell, Amelia Griffin, Renee Ullrich and Tahlia Thorne, only to be delayed 2 hours due to heavy fog at Melbourne airport. Plans of checking in and relaxing before training at 1:30pm had to be altered to immediate training at The Taekwondo Academy, Point Cook after landing.
The training started out with a session of light sparring, with members from a few different Victorian clubs, and then concluded with a very successful sports psychology and mental preparation session, which was used by the team for competition the very next day.
After training the team headed to the hotel Ibis to check in, rest up ready for a team dinner in Lygon St, then an early nite so they could catch up on rest for the competition day.
The Victorian inter-club runs a similar round robin system as a Korean open. Players would be grouped up in their divisions, taken out to a designated court and contest until a winner was determined, so win or lose you get a minimum of 2 fights or more unlike the elimination process currently used.

Much more important than the medals, is what the team experienced, learned and bonded as a team, looking after each other. They have also gained new knowledge and skills to work on before nationals.
The team would like to thank the supporters, Nick Thorne for driving the team around and Greg Griffin for looking after the kid's daily nutritional intake for peak performance.
Well done to all and best of luck at the nationals in Canberra on the 8th - 11th September!

2nd Gold Coast Open 2011 (14th -15th May)
Total Medal Tally: 2 Gold, 4 Silver, 1 Bronze
From a team of 6 players just kicks takes home 2 golds, 4silver and a bronze. The competition was much stronger this year with international teams from New Zealand, Samoa and Ghana. Also attending were the nation's strongest clubs, turning the competition into a national championship.
Poomsae divisions were huge this year and the quality has definitely improved. It was a huge effort and shows that Just Kicks are competitive in sparring and poomsae, with Lejla Murtic taking silver from a division of 12 high calibre competitors.
Thomas Whitaker proves to be a name the Victorians will remember, after defeating Beau Lang 12-8 in he's first major black belt competition. Thomas only received he's black belt last month!
Maddie Granozio was our only competitior competing in Olympic Qualifications for London 2011. Maddie fought another 3 matches late into the night from 10pm, and didn't finish until 1am. Unfortunately she didn't qualify, her opponents having years of international experience over her. Maddie then had to get up early to compete the next day, losing on a controversial golden point to New Zealand. It was a great experience for Maddie.
Well done to all just kicks competitors and coaching staff. Great effort and results by all.
